UNCAGED SA brings you a new event (one of the many to follow) OF MICE AND MEN - an artistic exploration of the complex, twisted relations humans form with the world around them - especially animals. Taking place in the form of a carnie/freak show, the event sets to take our audience on a bizarre journey through the medium of arts, which will hopefully leave them to draw their own conclusions

"Finally a proper lounge for Jozi. We may be the epitome of the fast-paced rodent marathon, but sometimes you just gotta chill to take the edge off. Jozi has been starved and, frankly, neglected in this department. It's either a crappy franchised pub playing sokkie treffers, or a bangin club. Where's the middle ground? Anyone au fait with Cape Town knows that they have hundreds of laid back chilled places to park off on a lazy couch with your mates, talk shyte, drink liquor and listen to down tempo house."

Personal note - we originally had it at a different venue, but after some last minute unexpected trouble, rendering the owners unable to function, the guy from 96 saved our behinds. I think it will be way nicer btw :-)

MUSIC

TALE OF THE SON
the one word that emerges from people's experiences of this band is: Journey.
That's exactly what it's like. You sit as close to the stage as possible, as if not to miss a single thing, and next you find yourself far, far away, carried by the incredibly complex music and breathtaking visuals, deep into the landscapes of your mind you tend to forget in every-day monotony.
''noise, endless soundscapes and sweet symphonies of nothingness.
Tale of the Son are set to reinvent the concept of instrumentalism by using visuals instead of vocals to compliment their approach to their version of an unique resonance. Playing a non-stop set of about 50 minutes while a dedicated projector reflects continuous visuals creating a sound track to their music, they create music that can be described as soundscapey in nature with no specific structure, causing each listener to go on a different journey whilst listening to it. The core of their sound contains the essence of what music once was and transports the listener to the personal instrumentalised landscape of their minds.''

ASQUS
first time i heard the glitchy intensity of the Asqus sound, i titled him my favourite experience in experimental electronica... and got ripped off for being a groupie. Be that as it may, I was genuinely blown away, and he still is. The music has so much thought behind it, so much intelligence, so much variety – it's rather hard to describe... but if i try: It's like standing on a ledge between the most complex of minds, and simultaneous simplest joy of life i haven't felt since i was a kid. You'll see!
Experimental electronic musician Asqus will perform a
live piece combined with spoken word and visuals. The work, titled
'unnaming', is inspired by the idea of 'Becoming Animal' by Gilles
Deleuze and Felix Guattari and the poem 'The Animals Reject Their Names'
by Margaret Atwood, and is an exploration of the exploitation of the
marginalised (non-human animals, the indigenous, the environment) that
seeks to recontextualise data from these forces into an aesthetic,
visceral form.

KIM CATHOLIC
what do you get when you take the most incredible voice, run it over some incredible lyrics, mix in raw emotion and intensity and present the cocktail in the container shaped like a beautiful girl? You get an powerfull energy, a memorable experience and the audience walking away slightly smitten
''The music is alternative/folk. Somewhere between alternative/country and folk/rock! Influences include Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Radiohead, Johny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Ani di Franco! ''

DEEP FRIED MAN
I always considered a sense of humour to be the highest form of intelligence, and this man takes the cake. He is tight, he is f***ing funny, he is a lyrical genius, he will have you in stitches and you'll say under your breath – i know JUST how you feel, buddy! And then you'll say – dammit, I love this guy! :-)
''Deep Fried Man writes folk songs for the mall generation. These songs are infused with bits of blues, soul, rock, hip-hop and nihilism. Deep Fried Man is pissed off because people kill each other so much and because the world is a stupid place, where there's never anything good on TV. But mainly, Deep Fried Man is pissed off because his relationships never work out. Deep Fried Man channels all of these frustrations into songs that combine raw emotions with sharply observed satirical commentary. His lyrics are cynical, but not depressing. They are way more likely to make you laugh than cry. They are about sex, drugs, violent crime, pain, rejection and apathy. You know, the usual. Deep Fried Man has also been known to throw more than a couple of bizarre covers into his sets, and his version of Snow's 'Informer' has been described by music journalist Daniel Friedman as 'almost as good as the original'. ''

WARREN MCGREGOR
you can learn to play guitar like a god – which he has. You can sing in a perfect voice, write incredible lyrics – which he does... But you can't fake a genuine passion – for music and for life, an open heart and an incredible gift of showing the world its own beauty throught music. Experience a beautiful soul, at its most honest.
